Pictures from an exhibition

by Drucilla James

Celebrities and community groups have created 20 new designs to turn the Royal Parks’ deckchairs into works of art and to raise money for improvement projects.

Designers include pop stars – Ronnie Wood and Take That’s Howard Donald; established artists like Maggi Hambling and Michael Craig –Martin; actors, Miranda Richardson and Harry Enfield with his Hello Ducks contribution; and the garden designer, Chris Beardshaw.

Each picture in the collection interprets the theme of Nature’s Grand Design and subjects featured by the artists range from herons to horses and from bananas to bees – with two deckchair motifs highlighting the plight of the bumblebee.

“Deckchair Dreams is all about bringing together art, design and the natural environment – as well as providing a stylish place to sit,” said Sara Lom, Chief Executive of the Royal Parks Foundation.

For £4, visitors to Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park or Regent’s Park, will be able to put their feet up and catch a nap on one of these masterworks during the summer months.

But if you would like to do your snoozing in the privacy of your own home or garden or hang a version on your wall as a conversation piece, these limited edition Royal Park deckchairs can be snapped up via the website http://www.supporttheroyalparks.org/shop/deck_chairs at from £80 -£135 each.
